UltraVNC SingleClick

UltraVNC SingleClick has got to be one of the greatest pieces of software I’ve seen in some time:

UltraVNC SC is a mini (166k) UltraVNC Server that can be customized and preconfigured for download by a Customer. UltraVNC SC does not require installation and does not make use of the registry. The customer only have to download the little executable and Click to make a connection. The connection is initiated by the server, to allow easy access thru customers firewall.

Keep in mind that in this case, ‘Server’ equals the customer’s computer. You can customize it, send it to someone who’s having a problem, and start your VNC viewer in listen mode. When they click it, it will start a VNC connection to you on the IP address you customized, and you can run their computer to help them fix their problem.

I can think of at least 3 people who will be getting one of these from me this week to solve “but it works on my machine”. Fantastic.

What is even better is when both you and the remote machine are behind firewall.

Sometimes at work (behind the corporate firewall) I have to make support connections to remote users (also behind a firewall).

I have a machine at home. I keep 3 ports open in my firewall.

  1. For my own ssh connections into the machine.
  2. One for the ssh viewer to redirect to the server
  3. One for the ssh server to redirect to the viewer

Firewalls and problems supporting live users via remote connections are a thing of the past.

What ssh server/client do you use? openssh or some other commercial apps?
