Console Battle Looming

A nice little war is brewing between the big players in the console market. Last week, Microsoft introduced the XBox 360, to go on sale during the 2005 holiday season:

The 360 will pack a powerful technological punch, with an advanced IBM Power-PC processor and next generation ATI graphics chip. The machine will once again feature a hard drive for users to store saved games, music and more. This time, the drive will be 20GB (versus the current 8GB drive on the Xbox). It will also be detachable, allowing users to take their data to friends’ houses, and upgradable.

Microsoft partners have already announced games like Halo 3 and Quake 4. This prompted Sony to release details about the PlayStation 3, due in one year.

[…] the PlayStation 3 boasts an engine 35 times more powerful than the PlayStation 2, according to Sony. It will support up to seven wireless controllers and has outputs for two high-definition televisions (HDTVs).

And Nintendo wants in on the action as well, announcing the Revolution system for 2006:

The new console will be powered by a chip developed by IBM code-named “Broadway” and a graphics processor from ATI Technologies code-named “Hollywood.”

Revolution will use 12 cm optical discs and be about the size of three DVD cases stacked together, the Nihon Keizai said.

Standards wars suck, but market share wars are fantastic.
