A couple of interesting things about Google’s GMail in this article: FIrst, and not all that surprising, is that GMail is running on Apple Xserve hardware, which is something I’d heard before (reported here earlier.) I’d be interested to find out if they’re actually using OS X on them.

Another cool thing is that Richard Jones has figured out a better way to access and use the 1GB of storage space that comes with a Gmail account:

GmailFS provides a mountable Linux filesystem which uses your Gmail account as its storage medium. GmailFS is a Python application and uses the FUSE userland filesystem infrastructure to help provide the filesystem, and libgmail to communicate with Gmail.

Apple does something similar with .mac accounts — you can mount your 100MB file share on your desktop — but .mac isn’t free, and I’m cheap. So far this tool is only for Linux users, but I can’t see why it wouldn’t work for Macs as well, or for PC’s for that matter.
