Ban Comic Sans MS

ban comic sans :: Putting the Sans in Comic Sans

In July 2002 the campaign to stop the overuse and abuse of the font began. Since that time, many people worldwide have expressed their support of our efforts. While we recognize the font may be appropriate in a few specific instances, our position is that the only effective means of ending this epidemic of abuse is to completely ban Comic Sans.

I was slightly shocked to find your anti Comic Sans MS posting as I had recently decided to use it on my baby website www.sukur.info on the grounds that it is informal (I'd even say friendly) and highly legible even when small. Both aspects are of some importance as I don't want the site to look as academic as much of it is. I'm using it in combination with Goudy Handtooled (for titles) and Verdana (for bits and pieces, e.g., captions).

My main complaint with Comic Sans is that I can't create a schwa ( an 'e' rotated clockwise 180° and representing an open vowel) in it which is a favorite vowel in Sakun (the Sukur language). I'm forced to use an 'ë' instead.

So I'd happily give up Comic Sans but only for a font that has characters with a similar feel and where I can generate a variety of special characters.

Advice would be appreciated, also (sorry if I've missed something) a bit more explanation of why you want to ban Comic Sans.
