SCO May Sue Another Company

SCO’s next target: SGI?

“Chris Sontag, the senior vice president in charge of SCO’s effort to derive more revenue from its Unix intellectual property, has said two things that suggest SGI is a likely target.

First, Sontag said in June that SCO is contemplating legal action against another major North American hardware maker besides IBM. Second, in an August presentation at which SCO detailed some of its complaints about Linux code, Sontag described SGI file system software called XFS in a list of ‘examples of significant infringing derivative works’ contributed to versions 2.4 or 2.5 of the heart, or kernel, or Linux.”

This is the last thing SGI needs, given its problems of late. They’ve laid off 25% of their workforce in the last year. Why sue someone who can’t pay? When SGI goes under and lays everyone off as a direct result of this (should it happen), we’ll see just how unpopular SCO can make itself.

I just can't wrap my brain around this whole SCO deal. Are these guys stupid, greedy, desperate or all of the above? How can they possibly think this is going to help them?

They're greedy. They have an apparently tenuous link to the original Unix source that they claim made it into Linux (although many who know say the link is bogus).

They see dollar signs when they look at how many Linux installs there are, and they want to get paid, pure and simple. They don't care who they piss of, how unpopular they are, how many lives or companies they ruin, or how ridiculously far-fetched their claims are (as little as 80 lines of code by some accounts).

They just want money, and they'll apparently do whatever they have to to get it.
